sword or axe NO heavy strike (skill can't be used)

as in the title i have been saving some axes and swords for a heavy strike build that i have finally put together but to my surprise, although the tooltip says i can use axes and swords (one handed) i cannot. is this a bug? or is that the way it's supposed to be and u can only use two handers, maces and sceptres. because that's all i can use. any ideas?. oh and on an off point, unless i have opened my currency tab to view my currency, the game doesn't recognise that i have any (currency). i.e. at the crafting table or any attempted purchase.

yeah i was gonna say has to be shockwave or nightblade, one of the weapon specific ones shockwave was my guess.
