Greek is such an unreal language.

No offense to the Greeks - I love you all and I was reading the Greek thread in here recently with fascination.

But...

"Detergent?" A porry pandy co! Also, "cabbage" is lakhano while "vegetables" is lakhanika. So... all vegetables are pretty much just different cabbage-like things.

Did I mention "garbage bag" is literally sackula <for the> scoopithia? THE SACK FOR THE SCOOPY THINGS

And let's not forget that random Greek words sound like Japanese:

Avto ki-ni-tou = car
sa-ka-ki = dress jacket

For reference:
απορρυπαντικό
λάχανο
λαχανικά
σακούλα για τα σκουπίδια (in English wiktionary you drop the final α and just look up σκουπίδι)
αυτοκίνητο
σακάκι

I bet you're jealous that I got to take Russian, then.

Мне нравится русский язык потому, что он очень логичный.

I laughed pretty hard, that's some raw stuff.

Cheers for the link.

If you never experienced the 90s in the eastern bloc you really missed out :)

The fun Greek word for today is... καρπούζι.

I think it's an awesome language. In 90s Australia, high school languages were basically French, German, Indonesian and Japanese. No prizes for guessing which I took. But the whole time I was wishing we were more traditional, that I could take Latin or (ancient) Greek. Relying on translations of some of the most important things ever said or written kind of sucks.

But EVERY language has its weird, literal definitions. I imagine at some point in the US, garbage bins really were cans, and there were baths and people actually rested in public urination/defecation facilities. Or how about this one? MOVIES. Move. Ees.

What's the literal translation of ambulance in German again?

And in Japanese, we have these lovely Chinese carryovers called Yojijukugo, where four kanji together create all sorts of awesome idiomatic meaning. The linked site just randomises through them, but if you can't read hiragana it's sort of useless. You can find easier examples on wikipedia.

Here's a good one:

千変万化
Senpenbanka
Literally, a thousand variations, ten thousand changes
Typically, 'infinite variety' or 'endless shift'

Ambulance in german = krankenwagen. Basically translates into sick/ill car/wagon. Translations are a funny thing.

I always liked languages with anything other than the "normal" alphabet, makes them look more awesome! Also they sound great like Db Super. Its so good because its japanese. I even do recognize some words every now and then so maybe someday i do learn japanese from watching subbed animes.

I was being slightly hypothetical, because 'krankenwagon' is famously used as an example for how harsh German can sound.

Thats why i prefer english. It sounds nicer to my ear somehow. French sounds arrogant and german sounds rough. Asian languages sound royal and hispanic sounds laid back.

Funny, the usual comment is that it sounds gay.
