What Rares to pick up.

So i just made it to merc on my first dual totem MF character 40iiq//230iir atm. Lots of rares are dropping, im loving it, BUT the sorting out thing not so much haha, how do i know which rares are good/valuable and which ones arnt? I feel i might just be selling valuable things to a merchant.

Like if i pick up a rare armor, with 2 30+resists and life 60+ thats good right? All this stuff comes at you so quickly endgame haha.
I usually pick up the top series:
Hubris circlet
Vaal Regalia
Astral Plate
Glorious Plate
Sorcerer (Gloves & Boots)
Titan (Gloves & Boots)
Slink (Gloves & Boots)
Zodiac Leather
Eternal Burgonet
Lion Pelt
"This Is A Buff" (Bex_GGG august 30, 2016)
if things are valuable or not depends on a lot of things:
- league you're playing in
- if it's a temp league, time the league is already running
- flavour of the month builds which require certain items

for example if it's 6 socket / 5 link and you have crafted the missing resist on it it is probably worth some chaos on talisman sc at the moment.

best practise is to setup a shop and just publish the items, if they sell fast you're probably offering too cheap, if they don't sell you either priced them too high or the item is crap.
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
If you like lots of text here's a comprehensive guide to poe.trade and pricing rares:

If you don't like lots of text here's a quote from myself:

First, you only pick up good bases, i.e. body armours with the highest or nearly highest base armour, weapons with highest damage etc. You'll have to learn those bases (though item filters help a lot), and can look at something like http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Body_armour to quickly find out which bases are good.

Second, you need high rolls. In leagues that have gone on for some time or in Standard, that means tier 1 or tier 2 rolls usually. But which stats do you want on your items?

The short of it: Weapons used for dealing damage need %increased physical damage + flat physical damage + attack speed. Body armours and shields need high defense (ES/armour/evasion) + good life roll + resists. Other stuff needs mostly high life + high resists though boots need movement speed as well, and helmets can be good if they have very high defense (ES/armour/evasion). If one of these stats is missing sometimes you can master-craft it on. You can see what is considered high for a certain stat at http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Affix - 25% increased attack speed is great but 25% increased physical damage is very poor. There are some stats which are almost always useless and can be ignored: accuracy, flat life regeneration, stun recovery, damage reflect.

But: be prepared that even with careful choosing ninety percent of items you identify will be vendored, and almost all the rest will only be worth five Chaos...a body armour with 1.9k armour and a high life roll but little resists won't even sell for two Chaos. A good weapon base with high physical damage (increased and flat) but no increased attack speed (and no way to mastercraft it) isn't sellable either. If you're not sure about the worth of an item search for similar ones on poe.trade and price/vendor accordingly.

Also pick up 6-sockets (vendor for Jewellers).
scroogetemplar / scroogewitch / scroogemarauder

Ah yes I took this screenshot in a map yesterday because it gave me a chuckle:

I call it "first world magic find problems"

To help sort, I've set in my loot filter to add a green border to any item that is of the highest base type. This helps me to quickly glance through and fill up my inventory with only potentially high end items.

My first trip to town I bring back uniques, 6 socket items, and high base rares.
My second trip I bring back chromatic recipe items (light blue in my loot filter)
The rest of the trips I'll fill up on random other rares and make as many trips as I have portals remaining.

In each step I fill the gaps in my bag with maps, currency, and jewelry.

PS
PS: only reason there is some stacked currency on the ground is because I collected it and then dropped it again. I didn't add anything extra to this photo that didn't come from the map.

Also, I usually don't pile up all my drops like this. It's very time inefficient. I only did it on this run because I knew I wouldn't have enough portals to bring back all the loot so I wanted to make sure I chose my items wisely.
