Why is GCP so valuable? It's not that useful in game
|
GCP increases the quality of a gem.
but increased gem quality doesnt do much. i cant think of a single gem that benefits ALOT from the use of GCP. so why is it so valuable? |

oh trust me there is big diffence from having 5linked all 0 quality, and have 5link all 20%, trust me

" This. Using 1 or 2 GCP's will not make a noticeable difference, AT ALL. But using a lot of them, will make a skill become empowered a lot. |

" wow.. never thought of the multiplitive power of linking multiple 20% gems. thx! Last edited by Pi314#5955 on Feb 8, 2013, 9:48:12 AM

20% quality gems have very little if any noticeable improvement for most gems.
Only primary attacks benefit from them, auras don't get any stronger, most support gems do not gain any power at all(lol .5% chill duration per 1%). |

Skill gems are something that you will keep forever. There is just no other gem that could be better than one which already has 20% quality bonus. So if you invest in GCP´s it strengthens your character permanently unlike gear.

1. Universally useful and needed. Not everyone needs say an orb of regret.
2. Relatively rare. Notice the qualifier relatively. 3. Synergy power. ARPGs are games of incremental improvement. Past a certain point big sudden gains in power stop happening and it becomes a game of harvesting many tiny improvements to progress further. 4. The item is unusual (but not unique) in that it has a high level of certainty. If you get some Chaos Observed for example you are just buying lottery tickets. You know exactly what a GCP will do. Now at my puny level yeah it is not so important. And some skills do not benefit too much them really . But eventually we are all going to get to Merciless and maps. |

The bonuses from quality may not be huge, but they are 'free' in the sense that they don't take up sockets or affix slots on gear, and they don't raise mana costs. There is no reason you wouldn't want all your gems at 20%, eventually; the only question is how much you care about getting there.
Also, as others have pointed out, those small-ish individual bonuses can really add up when you have 4 or 5 supports on a single skill gem. Finally, they're pretty much the only crafting item that is useful at endgame and not at all RNG-dependent. Even the other +quality items are upgrading gear that has random stat rolls and will likely be replaced some day. At least your core skill and support gems for your build will never change, so getting them to +20% is a guaranteed way to improve your character forever. Each GCP will definitely get you closer to the goal; you don't have to burn through dozens of them hoping for a lucky roll. Most players should just trade their GCPs for now, but sooner or later everyone will want to consume a fair number of them. Right now, most people still have mediocre-at-best gear and many don't have every skill and support gem they want yet, so the bonuses from gem quality seem tiny compared to getting a decent gear upgrade, finding a useful new support gem, etc. However, in a few months, when you're grinding high level maps and have really good items in every slot, GCPs will seem like a much better way to spend wealth than burning tons of Exalteds trying to replace your near-perfect rares with nearer-perfect rares. |
