A Diablo 2 vet's response to the 0.9.3 dev diary

The general hope is that it won't matter, as you'll be able to do things the other classes don't do. And that is qualify for combined powers much easier, such as my current witch who's trying to get a hold of enough dex to make multishot nice for her skills.

Hybrids are built for combining two parts of the tree and do it much bitter than any other class in the game. The compensation should be the fact that the hybrids are capable of making combinations of gems that no other class can pheasably make.

Sure a witch going nothing but int gets more points over the long course...but if you go nothing but int you wind up missing out on sweet bonuses in the other trees. Bonuses that may synergize enough to be worth it.

Basically we need to see the new passive trees, and see how things work before we complain about hybrids being too weak. Then once we can proove such a thing should we start to work with the development team to figure out a good way to fix this. Don't want to change too many things related to stats at once..need to see what the new status quo makes..and then we see how to fix it.

Yeah, pretty much this. From the way it sounds, it seems like each class will start with, let's just say, four points in specific areas. The way I visualize it from the example is a Duelist has a point near a dexterity dual-wield branch, another near a strength-shield branch, another near a strength two-handed branch, and a point near a dexterity evasion branch.

For an example of a "pure" class, the Witch would have points near lightning damage, cold damage, energy shield, and wand branches. That's the way I think it will work, anyways. So, a Witch COULD get the same dual-wield bonus that the Duelist can reach, but she'd spend more points while the Duelist starts with a couple of choices that are flavorful to the class (as a master of weapons).
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Definitely agree. Currently I think hybrids are frankly plain out superior to pure classes, because all those 'extra' points the pure classes get are completely wasted when requirements top out at 299 of a stat.

Every 9.2 frost or fire witch would be better off as a 6th class character to get more levels of the amazing green projectile gems. There is no advantage of being a marauder over a duelist atm: A str duelist could have all the same armor and gems while still having higher levels of green gems and more total mitigation from mixing in some evasion instead of hitting the armor cap. The only reason a bow duelist isn't better than a bow ranger is because literally every single bow applicable passive is in the dex tree.

It's not about passives. Dual wield is strictly inferior to 2h regardless (hopefully this will change in 9.3 :) )

Why? Because of lack of AoE duel wield skills?

The base dps is substantially lower. The gap increases as you get more IAS (since the IAS bonus from DW is additive).

It's not as bad as I make it sound if you choose the right skills. Dualstrike is almost as good as doublestrike. Cleave got buffed as sort of a bandaid solution so that it no longer applies a 50% penalty to DW (think it's a 75% penalty now?), which makes it potentially on par with 2h Cleave. The reason those 2 skills are ok is because they use both weapons at once.
