Ease of Leveling

The level cap is currently set to 100. The FAQ says that you could spend years improving/developing your character(but not necessarily leveling). And then I read in the Flux interview that one of the developers played WoW to level 30 and felt it was too slow leveling and he didn't like the grind.

Except back when I played WoW I was able to go from 1 to 70 in about 96 hours of playtime(4 days).

Also it will take 10 times longer to level skill gems...so there will be a grind after all? Was just wondering what thoughts others had on this.

wow was in my experience the fastest leveling mmo game out there from the jump. there was a point in EQ where i could max in a couple days but not right off the bat. wow has so many quests i never really grinded any levels, i dont think i ever grinding more than 30% of a single level in that game.

i like leveling, each time you level you feel you are getting somewhere. every game makes it really easy to level at first but really hard near the end. i personally would rather see a more consistant level pattern so i am not rushed with levels early on but then at the upper levels i might not see one for a few days.

also however the level system is at launch it will be easier as time goes on and i think that really needs to be taken into consideration when setting how long each level takes

i like the fact that i can hit max level but still can gain xp for things like my gems, gives you something to constantly work for. what i wonder is (and maybe this has been answered) can you hand down gems that have been leveled up? can i max a fireball gem or whatever then sent it to my new character. i would assume there will be some level restrictions added to the gems if this was possible but who knows.

I'm pretty sure they said somewhere that the max level for gems is going to be something like 10 or 20, whereas the max level for characters will be 100...

I will be very surprised if gems don't have minimum level requirements... at least gems that have been levelled

Yea, they will have minimum requirements for your attributes and maby for level. They were saying if you don't meet the requirements for the next level of the gem, it wont level up, which would force it to be un-equipped.

If they made the leveling progression kind of like guild wars 2 plans to it would be interesting, the first few levels are relatively easy, then the rest of them (about 20-100) each take the same amount of time, so your leveling on a regular basis instead of further and further apart.
now this sounds like an idea right up apocs alley
Sounds quite a cool system. I hate playing a game for two days and then need a micrometer to check whether the xp bar has moved or not ...
I used to be apathetic, now I just don't care.
This necrobump was brought to you, in part, by Coca-Cola™.

Coca-Cola™ does not necessarily encourage the use of speed leveling in hardcore, and does is not for/against the skill gem system. Have a nice day.

WoW was just much more evenly paced in terms of level ups. With games like PoE, judging from Diablo 2's scaling, you can level up very quickly at first, then it slows down a bit but is still reasonably fast, and then once you get to the end game, the levels really start coming more slowly.

I seriously don't think progressively slower leveling should even be debated in a game like this.

IMO the more pressing issue is what to do in gaining those levels, specifically later on, and if you're experienced in the game.
I think what we are talking about here is actually at the heart of Diablo 3's arguably disastrous reception by the gaming community. Due to the fact that progress in grinding for gear is a matter of luck, it was entirely possible to be well-equipped, skillful and possessed of good tactics and walk away with absolutely nothing to show for hundreds of hours of game play or worse, lose progress by dying a few times and having to squander your gains on repairs. This, coupled with the level of difficulty assigned to Inferno (which many players felt was unreasonable), lead to the exodus of over 65% of the player base. (Yes, we all know this. . .just summarizing.)

I know when I sit down for a session of POE that, if I am smart and quick and have designed a solid toon, I will walk away with at least some experience on my toon or gems. That is a big part of why I am here.
