Strength vs Dexterity melee skills.

In my opinion I find that most of the Strength skills fall short when compared to dexterity skills.

Str

Infernal blow - Decent. Lot of elemental fire.
Dominating blow - Lag fest
Heavy strike - Knockback fest (annoying)
Lightning strike - more ranged than melee
Glacial hammer - pretty strict requirements
Ground slam - great with conc effect
Cleave - Kinda a joke really when compared to reave.
Sweep - Strictly limited.


Dex

Dual strike - High dps, squishy
Double strike - Good dps.
Reave - With conc effect, very good. weapon requirement
Cyclone - Great with conc effect
Flicker strike - 500k dps crit flicker?

Probably a couple more, but these are the main skills for melee.



Currently there's almost no reason to use strength gems for physical. Ironic, but it's true. Heavy strike causes too many problems and is only paper dps (you have to keep moving). Infernal half fire, Lighting strike is...lightning and Glacial hammer is cold. Ground slam isn't a very reliable single target skill, especially when compared to skills like reave and cyclone.

Dominating blow is a pain in the ass, mana cost is insanely high and causes severe fps drops in multiple cases. Parties usually hate the 50 minions running around.

On the other side, double strike is simple and effective. Hits twice for 70%, 140% total.
Reave with concentrated effect is amazing. How many heavy strike marauders are there compared to cyclone marauders? Cyclone is also a very good skill with the correct links. Dual strike has great dps but downside is lack of shield. Flicker strike...........

I think that currently the strength gems are in a bad shape and overall, it's much easier to use a dex gem for dps. Strength = Physical? Why are so many strength gems elemental? I think some skills like heavy strike, need to be adjusted so that the mechanics can be used more effectively and easily. Knocking enemies back when you want to kill them is annoying. Knocking enemies back when you're in a party with other melee people (probably using reave/double strike) causes them to find the skill annoying.

Are there going to be any new strength gems being released? Possibly for melee?

What expectations should we have for a release of such a gem?

We've recently had barrage which is dex, storm call and flameblast which are both int. How likely will a new strength melee gem be introduced?

This is mostly just my opinion on the physical damage side of things.

I think you have a really good post over here. The designers most likely first designed strength meelee skills thinking that people who use these gems have much more strength attribute points than dexterity attribute points so they are at the advantage from bonus physical damage from the extra strength.

However as of now, all of us are already clever enough to know that this game you have to balance out all stats and mix gems in order for most characters to work. A balanced character can easily outclass a strength intensive marauder.

As a result, those strength gems are pretty useless now.
well you may call dominating blow a lagg fest , however its a great skill that brings your party higher survivability(just as a summoner would) and a fairly decent boost of dps, heavy strike is really great damage vise, tho i have to agree that the knockback can be cancerous if you have high aps, id take cleave over reave any time, id use reave only if i played with claws

Using dominating blow will only bring a 6 man party pain, where the screen is cluttered with millions of minions. It's much better for solo play as they tank for you, but still cause a dramatic drop in fps. Heavy strike is only paper damage. The knockback effect causes you to have to keep moving and a skill like double strike already beats heavy strike in dps.

Reave does 100% per attack scaling with 176% at level 20. Cleave does 70% scaling to 146% at level 20. Both cases could use concentrated effect.

I like variety. If everything was made "balanced" none of our choices would matter. You think you have found a better choice. Good for you. But that doesn't mean the other choices should be changed.
If I could ever get a god damn soul taker, which I never will, I am pretty sure Dom blow would be the best melee skill in the game. Right now I use double strike as I cannot afford the cost of Dom Blow in a BoR. I play solo.
