How long does it take to level a gem to 20?

I am working on my second summoner. My first one made it to 78 and now this one is at 65. My zombie gem still is only like 20% into level 18. Do they take forever once you hit level 18 or something?

If you carry it all game, maybe mid 80s your lvl.
Then you've got to 20% qual it and level the gem all over again. (pays to lvl 2 gems, so you've got one to use while you lvl the quality one). We tested it extensively

On my Freeze Pulser the gems maxed at about lvl 82. So, I believe this should be your goal :)

It depends on a couple of factors:
-Number of deaths -Penalties for running overlevelled contents. From my experience, without death and progressing with maps, you can expect to level a gem to 20 by mid level 85 | |

" no, the very opposite :) its the sign you dont die (or very little) and you are not playing overleveled areas (in case you didnt start leveling gems late) IGN: Eric_Lindros

Gems take a while from 18 to 20. Dont get stuck doing lower level content, push to highest level areas you can and you'll get them to 20. If you're doing City of Sarn, well, it's gonna take a while.
