It's time to face the fact that Totems are a failed mechanic.
By failed, I mean that they are broken in myriad unfixable ways. They simply don't fit. They are either weak and horrible, or extremely overpowered, but never appropriate. The problems are NOT in the numbers. The problems are in the intangibles:
- Drawing aggro - Taking 'reflection' hits for you - Not costing mana except for initial creation - If a totem dies, you just recast it, NP. This has led to ridiculously broken builds like Dual MF Sporkers that simply never die and don't need defense at all because oh look, totems draw aggro and tank for you while simultaneously costing zero mana, avoiding reflection, and spamming kill spells. As it stands, from a power maxing standpoint, there is no reason to ever make a non-totem build. I do not believe that you can fix totems. Please remove them. Thank you. You should add that they
- deal more damage than you could ever deal as a self caster - the node is easy to reach - the nodes drawback is barely noticable because you can still use traps, curses and generate power/frenzy charges - they dont require health investment all over the tree, the single life node infront of it is enough - on top all the bonuses they grant you you even safe a lot of mana |

They have a major drawback, though: Boring gameplay.

They aren't going anywhere, to say the least. They're too deeply moored in the game as it is.

" Totem builds probably have one of the most active and versatile gameplay in the whole game. How I used to play them: - place totem - generate power charges with Ice Spear or generate Frenzy and Power Charges with Frenzy - generate Endurace Charges with a 20% quality Enduring Cry - Curse You run Conduit, provide every type of charge to your party while basically never doing nothing. Thats way more interesting and versatile than most one button builds are. |

The drawback to dual totems should be that your mana is spent by spells cast by totems.

I dont get their rage, I dont get why they want perfect endgame balance in a non competitve geargrinder but realizing that totem builds are way superior to anything else isnt hard. Ahem. It's not a slippery slope argument, and it's not a 'nerf all build' hyperbole. Totems, and totems alone, are the cited problem here. There's a reason no other game has a mechanic like this one: it doesn't work.
Let me reiterate that point: totems do not work in an ARPG. There is no 'action' involved with a proxy caster that doesn't spend mana, draws aggro, protects you from the horrible elemental reflection mechanic, and generally allows you to sit back and do nothing while something else kills for you. It just doesn't work. Please remove totems completely. The game is in beta; it is possible. Path of Exile is an addictive game, yes, but only so far as the player avoids totems. The moment I created a totem build and found my kill speed increased 300-500% and my 'action' and 'fun' decreased a good 90%, I stopped playing. Let me reiterate that point: I stopped playing. " Protip: YOU don't have to use totems. If you quit playing because OTHER PEOPLE use totems, you were going to quit for some inane reason anyway.
