Beta key timer, the timer jumps when refreshing

As the title says, refreshing the home page will make the timer go like from 2:10 to 1:40 or 2:30. How is this explainable?

if I remember right the timer isn't the exact same for everyone (about a minute worth of difference is possible) so that way when the timer shows a new name it doesn't kill the forums (speed wise)
