Don't bother, DS44. That person has been struggling to engage me for a while now. Endgame being get someone who is always on thin ice with the moderators so heated up he falls right through it.

Aint gonna happen. I saw who posted it, read the first line, and scrolled on.

I have spent more than enough time here qualifying my stance on streamers as hard working individuals. I mean, I've chatted with folks like ZiggyD, Steelmage and Zizaran casually. Steelmage was pre streamer thanks to dire Aussie internet but I am overjoyed he finally got the recognition he so richly deserved as a true PoE HC legend.

But if we big benign contributors are whales, what are they? I thought shark was a nice term. Powerful, effective, respected, and apparently they don't sleep much.

But if you want to be REALLY honest? Streamers aren't even in the water with us. They're fishermen, busting a gut doing what a lot of people do for a hobby for a paycheque. And the really successful ones? They're basically using drag nets, while all the little fishies flop about as though they're somehow more special to the drag net fisherman than any of the others.

Don't you just love it when someone on a stream donates a hundred bucks and the streamer barely even notices?

I'm a millionaire and even I know that's fundamentally fucked.

And yes, if this part of the ocean dries up, of course those that fish for a living will seek other waters. That or find some other way of making money. How is that even in question? Similarly, they DO care about this part of the ocean because, well, it's theirs. They know it. They worked hard to carve a niche in it. Kinda sucks when that's taken away, doesn't it?

This is a legitimate form of caring. It's just one driven ultimately by self-interest. As, one might argue, are most forms of caring. ;)

Yeah I wont be baited, I only chose to engage generally speaking because this twisted streamer sentiment has bled into the minds of the community overall in my view.

I mean sure, as I indicated, there is an inherent symbiotic business relationship that the streamers have with the developers, but that in no way, has any direct measurable positive impact on the rest of the PoE community.

And this isnt even a condemnation on specific PoE streamers on a personal level; They are running a business. The point is their business doesnt even remotely take into consideration my (or anyone else's) enjoyment or experience with the game outside of the content it provides on their stream.

I suppose the TLDR would be that Streamers are great for the GGG predatory business model, but is, imo, completely toxic for the average players game experience.

I think this gets even more magnified as the gulf between these player segments has increased significantly over the past few leagues. Streamers, in fairness, have become the personification of bad design decisions. I dont fault them for trying to make a living, but they are also bad for the game. Both things can be, and are imo, true.

*grunt of agreement*

...I will wait to see if OP clarifies what they meant by 'casuals' working for 'whales' but otherwise feel this off topic jaunt has reached an amenable but irrelevant terminus.

Streamers do not give a single fuck about anything other than themselves and their own bottom line. If PoE goes belly-up they will be more than happy to play and stream something else.

They are completely toxic for 99.9% of the rest of the PoE playerbase. Do they help GGG from a marketing standpoint? Sure. Do they help GGG line their pockets with what I think is a pretty predatory business model? Yup. That's about where the relationship ends.

I have zero idea why you would defend a group of individuals that have zero concern about the PoE community or even the game generally speaking.

most of them love the game, love the community, have a genuine passion for these things.

unlike some people here.

You do realize that if streamers are doing well via donations, there's obviously a market for the game where cash is flush in excess to pay a nobody to play for you?

If the game was suffering, so would they.
