Let's say you have 1000 different outcomes, but the ones you would like fill only the top 5 spots. That makes 995 of the outcomes trash. When you don't get your item, you come and complain. Why?
I did a test of synth maps a few weeks ago. I ran over 100 synth maps and didn't find a single high value synth rare base. My circle ring drops only had 4 valuable implicits total across 77 drops - Conductivity on Hit, Spell damage per power charge x2, Vulnerability on hit.

Three were corrupt --> vendor because they were on bad bases and worthless. I dropped 1 50c+ synthesis item (unique AND rare combined) total across the 100+ runs that I did (no double cold/fire dropped for me.) I broke even-ish but without the one very lucky drop I had I would've lost 25ex+.

CaptainLance did a similar test on Youtube and got similarly wiped out, though his luck was better than mine.

My takeaways from exploring synth maps:
1. The regular synth maps are only worth ~30c, not 50c.
2. The triple synthesized implicit uniques are a fun gamble but you're always going to lose currency overall.
3. The exp gain in synthesis zones is very nice with all the extra mobs
4. The "mobs drop synthesized items" atlas mod is worthless

5. The "bosses drop a well-rolled fractured mod item" atlas mod is worthless
6. Since the invitations are so cheap and the map prices are so bloated it could be fun to bring some friends to the synth maps and do 4 synth maps followed by 6 invitations until the invitation supply drops. ~100c guaranteed return per rotation you do plus the value of any drops you get. Just for fun though. The Feared and beast rotations are way better currency.
7. If you're playing solo don't ever step foot in a synth map after you've gotten your atlas passives - chain guardian/elder maps if you're trying to make currency.
8. If you wanted to do a test of 1000+ synth maps to see if any actually good bases would drop you'd really need a custom loot filter to hide all the bad ones.

Not really. Sold several good synthesized item from those maps.

This is my second ring with this mod. Had much more luck after I changed from the fractured/three implicits to synthesized items.

Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

That's the sort of drop I was hoping for. I ran ~110 maps checking every single synth item and didn't get one single item worth anything (well, 1 +gem quality bow that I sold for 50c.) Out of thousands of synth items that makes me think there's some rarity penalty with that atlas mod.

Has he ever started a thread that wasn't complaining?
SlipperyJim did a test of 400 maps and his data pretty much confirm it's a terrible return on investment. If you don't hit the big drop you get wiped out. He had one single synth drop across 400 maps that moved him from loss to profit.

The keys to making it worthwhile would seem to be having a custom loot filter so you can skip checking all the bad bases and maybe a friend or two to split up and loot things more quickly. Then you can run multiple invitations (10c is cheap as hell) after each 4 maps.
