Skill Gem Merging (new Vendor recipe idea)

One thing that really is a PITA is leveling up a quality gem after you already have a normal one of the same type leveled especially to 19 or 20. It would be really nice to take the amount of XP put into your non quality gem and be able to apply it to a quality one.

Merging two gems of the same type together (using the vendor), combining both into one gem, taking the higher quality value and XP level from both.

Examples:

Fireball Level 20 + Fireball Level 1 Q15%
Result: Fireball Level 20 Q15%

Fireball Level 16 Q5% + Fireball Level 15 Q10%
Result: Fireball Level 16 Q10%

Bolding the next part because i'm sure people will miss it.

At no point is the XP or Quality added together, simply the larger value from either gem is taken and both gems are destroyed in the process with the new gem created. It won't be possible to power level gems.

Thoughts?

The idea is that higher quality gems have a penalty for being more powerful; they require substantially more XP to level up. I think this vendor recipe would make it too easy for you to have super-powered gems, not to mention give you less to look forward to end-game as leveling is much slower and every little bit helps.

So quality affects the XP of the gem? Didn't know that.

What about just taking the higest amount of XP between both gems then? Even though it would result in a lower level combined gem.

You mean "transferring" the XP from the used gem to the quality gem? That would definitely be more balanced, seeing as it wouldn't completely level the gem up to its previous level but would give you a nice little jump start.

Still, I kind of like the idea of having to start all over with a new gem. The inconvenience adds a little challenge. Maybe if you added only 50% of the used gem's XP?

This is basically what I was saying the entire time, you input two gems and both are destroyed and a new one is created, which has the higher value of XP from either, and the higher value of quality from either. The XP is not added if both have XP.

I don't think the XP needed to level a quality gem is more than a non quality gem.

Compare these two. They are the same level and require the same XP to level.

I disagree with any XP penalty for doing this.
You are permanently destroying one of the gems anyway.

Some items in this post are currently unavailable.
+1 for good idea, however:

There are merits to adding an xp penalty. Nothing too severe, but something that would make actually leveling the gem itself somewhat appealing, even if it isn't time consuming.
Maybe an extra orb to complete the recipe.

Like the two gems to be merged + 1 gemcutter. That would give it a recipe feel.

Throw a fusing in there for feel :p
I would suggest, rather then taking the higher XP value, there should be some penalty to fusing/merging skill gems, for example not converting 100% of the xp of high lvl gem to low lvl gem but for example (depending on quality and lvl perhaps) a decreased percentage, so it would still benefit the players that want to lvl their high quality gems faster, but it wouldnt breakt balance or completely remove the need for lvling the hight quality ones.
