Let's talk about P2W - What is it? What is it not?
There had been a lot of discussions about whether or not PoE has tendencies of being/becoming PoE. And with the potential introduction of more QoL features in the future (e.g. auto-sorting) these discussions certainly won't stop. Something I've noticed is that there seems to be a lot of different perceptions on what is Pay-to-Win, and what isn't. Especially when such features/mechanics were just recently added to the game, those discussions where mostly emotional with even wider opinions - not only in PoE but gaming in general.
That's why I'd like to discuss about what is and isn't P2W before potential features get implemented. To start this, I've prepared a survey (Google forms) with different scenarios that may or may not be added somewhere in the future where you can decide on how much each future is, in your opinion, P2W - and how much you'd like to see it. I plan to post the results here in, say, a week from now. Pretty sure it'll be also interesting to compare those results now with how that features will be received once (if) they'll be introduced. You can find the survey with 5 scenarios with scales from 1-10 here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-wiohTyoJ5oVIu7UYqiftcqApa-54IxFLu6t4NN63-YU40Q/viewform?usp=sf_link I'm really excited to see the results. Feel free to voice your opinions! :) Last edited by PraceAce#2900 on Jul 24, 2020, 5:41:08 PM Last bumped on Jul 27, 2020, 8:10:47 AM

I think PoE is definitely becoming PoE.

You can't WIN anything in this game. Pay to win what, exactly? WTF are people winning?

Voted, for how much a Google Survey can do in term of reliability.
Feature n° 1 already exists for the Chinese version. Auto-loot would favour even more zoom-zoom builds that can eventually convert all the low-tier currency in Alchemy, then turn them to Chisels with Zana, or just stock a lot of Fusing in order to 6L their equip much faster, maybe even just by benchcraft rather than by slamming. Feature n° 2 is discussed nowadays. I don't have any stash besides my 4 basic one, so I don't feel really a need to declare where to put my currency and where to put my trash, I can only scale so much with selling and for that Acquisition does its job. I can see however people doing actual trading wanting more this feature for a bettere QoL. Once again, this would allow zoom-zoom builds to spend less time in their hideout ("the hideout is lava"). Less time in Hideout, more time in map, more currency-per-second racked up with Feature n° 1 Feature n° 3 is... I don't know, never played private leagues but for what I've understood they are just event made by a player, for one or more players, they have some fun in it and then it's Void league. If it actually is Void league, then what happened there is just a bunch of player having their fun/challenging game without bothering most of the playerbase. If at the end is Standard/Hardcore league, then this could turn into an exploitable way to get league-exclusive or other valuables by paying actual money to host the League. This will hurt even more Standard/Hardcore, but since even GGG have a very low reputation of them (RIS - Rot in Standard), I don't think they have Standard/Hardcore health as their top priority Feature n° 4 is basically a Legacy Private League. Same as before, I don't see why deny a player to play the game for fun. Feature n° 5 is tricky: Put yourself to the Epilogue already at Lv70 with just the barebone character (no Ascendancy Trial done, all Waypoints activated, all non-side quest done so that you have to backtrack to get the points from side quests like Vilenta's Pets and the sort, only 2 Minor pantheons unlocked) would speed up a LOT gameplay, but certainly cannot be done as the very first thing you do when entering a League. Why, the reason is simple: What can you do as a naked character, without equipment? You could go mage, like it's standard with other ARPG (spells usually are bound to a character's statistics, not equipment), but... you have only 3 Wisdom's Scroll. This limits a lot what you can buy and... well, it would be a lv10-14 spell. You are still forced to backtrack for the extra skill points, get a bit of equipment and, finally, being able to even try to do your first map. Also, you'll do all Acts already with a -60% malus for everything. As you can see, it's not really a vantage as you state right now. Perhaps it needs some adjustment in order to make those "naked toons" be able to even do their first map Last edited by Maxtrux#0762 on Jul 17, 2020, 1:52:20 PM

" There are rare times when you can win real life stuff in PoE, like the recent laptop. I don't think buying some stash tabs makes the game P2W in any way though. It's pay for convenience imo, which is fair in a free to play game. If they had exp potions, item quantity/rarity potions and such, then I wouldn't play the game, but as long as its stash tabs, decorations and cosmetics, go ahead. |

what it is vs what it is not entirely belongs in whether you've played actual p2w games or not. If you think PoE is p2win you haven't, if you think PoE isn't p2win you have
Is it that cut and dried? Pretty much if you don't think it is go enjoy the games out there that are p2win it'll open your eyes to what a real wallet warrior is. The ultimate irony for me is these discussions almost always center around stash tabs yet the thing most likely to fall under the criteria is how easy it is to RMT |

Pay to win is something where you pay to get advantage in a competitive environment. PoE has nothing to do with that.

Win what ? Free to play means , no money required to log into game. " Quality of life " will suck without buying stash tabs , but all content can be done without paying real money .
