Steam or Standalone Client

Is there any any difference performance or otherwise in each client apart from the steam overlay?

There shouldn't really be much difference between these clients, but each player may have a different experience. If you have both an email address and Steam account linked to your Path of Exile account, you should be able to try out both to see what's the best fit for you.

depends on who you ask.

Some people say it helps their performance to use the steam client

Most people though see no difference in the running of the game (i never did)

And when you get down to it having another thing open and running uses resources that could be used for the game.

The differences for steam vs the standalone

The stand alone has faster downloads (steam dose some funky shit)
The stand alone client uses less disc space

Steam has the overlay (meh)
Steam has a time played counter (meh)
Steam has a different login method which helps those with dynamic IP addresses (the stand alone is very strict it the IP address)
Steam has alternative payment methods
Ancestral Bond. It's a thing that does stuff. -Vipermagi

He who controls the pants controls the galaxy. - Rick & Morty S3E1

Guess I'll give both a try, downloaded the Standalone in my off time earlier today.
