New player, a bit overwhelmed!

I downloaded the game a couple of days ago, and put in a few hours...so far i am pretty impressed! I have played RPG/ARPG for a long time, i grew up with muds (yes im old) and text based dungeons, then after a long time off them played a little LOTRO / WOW / Diablo on an extremely casual basis. There seems to be a lot to get my teeth into, but a few things that i cant seem to work out. Overall the array of options are a little overwhelming! if anyone could help with a few quick queries it would be a huge help. The game seems to shower you with gear, most of which i am assuming is junk- my packs are full within 2 minutes of leaving town!. Is there anyway to only pick up items above a certain rarity/value by default? I have seen some of the build guides - which are quite complex themselves! are there any really basic guides, about equipment and gems to use, builds etc?. Also i know people wont want the game to be hand holding, but do we ever get free resets? If i get 50 points in and want to change it seems impossible right now? Overall i am definitely enjoying it! I have tried a few 'freemium' games lately - Eternium, Darkness rises etc and this is a cut above. I am just finding it quite overwhelming for a newbie, despite me being used to the genre. Path of Exile is indeed quite a complex game, but that's also part of the fun! To address your questions: Path of Exile has support for so called "Loot filters" which (as the name implies) will filter what loot the game shows and can even give different aesthetics to differently valued items. A good place to start is with Neversink's lootfilters. You can find them here: https://github.com/NeverSinkDev/NeverSink-Filter/releases He updates the filters quite regularly and you'll have to manually update them by redownloading the filters. Installation instructions can be found here: https://github.com/NeverSinkDev/NeverSink-Filter To address your build questions, this post on the forums (duelist build guides) has a category with great beginner friendly builds that go a lot more in-depth: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2267540 If you want to switch builds and need to re-do your skilltree, you can either do the optional quests that grant you passive respec points, or you can use the "regret orb" which drops from monsters and can be bought from other players through trading. If there was one piece of basic advice I'd give every new player it would be this: cap your resistances (75% each, except chaos resistance) as soon as possible. Elemental resistances are really important for survivability.
Note that you get a 30% malus on all resistances after act 5 and 10 each, so you'll need to upgrade accordingly. |

I hope you manage to get through the hardparts of the game. It is the best aRPG that has been released ever in my opinion. You should follow a build guide with your first character, otherwise you might get lost in the big passive tree. This site features a big summirization of all the builds that are printed on this forum. Try to find a guide that features "Leaguestarter" Since these are relatively cheap and easy to get going. https://www.poebuilds.cc If you still play the game in a week i recommend buying a premium stash tab pack with 5 tabs and a currency tab. The currency tab lets you stack all the currency you find in the game, and there it is much easier to handle. The premium tabs can make your stashes public and this way you can display items that you want to sell. " I advice you to use 'default' item filter. You can select it in Options -> UI -> ItemFilter. It is decent. Thanks guys, such a wealth of information here- and the community seems really good (a huge plus for me)
Ive already learnt a fair bit whilst reading at work (i avoided energy shield items because i thought it needed a gem to 'power' it for instance. Ill definitely buy something premium if i decide to stick with it- for the sake of supporting the developers. Last question Im looking at the beginner builds, and most of them are not frozen pulse based.
