How much dps should you have to start mapping?

I'm a new player and working on a Juggernaut Tectonic slam build.
I'm wondering how much dps I should be doing by the end of act 10 before gearing up to see if my build will measure up later.

In PoB my current setup shows 8900 dps and I've read that end game requires upwards of 500k minimum. Can I really get that much just from endgame gear?

If you can get through act 10, you are geared enough to start mapping.

Mark1030 is right.
Btw where did you get that info?
Some people who talks about endgame mean the highest endgame content not general mapping.

Your weapon is tragical, buy some for 1-2C on market and you are likely good enough with DPS. P.s.: You want as much physical DPS from weapon as possible
MY CHALLENGES ARE DONE ON HC, IT'S NOT SC GUYS!

Don't get sucked into the DPS trap. You should be ooncerned with staying alive. If it takes you too long to kill a mob or boss, consider more DPS. If you're dying all the time or using your flasks all the time, add more life. You can do this by getting more life on gear and on the tree. The main thing you should be concerned with is your resists before entering maps. If they aren't maxed expect to die a WHOLE lot.
Arguing on the Internet: What's the point when you can't punch them in the face when they really piss you off?

I'm doing fine in the game right now. My worry is that I'll hit the end of act 10 and even after decking my build out in gear won't have enough damage to do the high end game content like shaper.

All the other tectonic slam builds I've seen all use oni gorushu and have a build quite different from mine, so I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice to focus on a shield for survivability and elemental/fire damage nodes to scale dmg instead.
You got 16 tiers of maps to get through before you start worrying about Shaper. Maps start at tier 1 level 68 monsters. Act 10 ends at level 67 monsters. If you can get through that, you can start mapping. As you're mapping you'll move up in tiers as you improve your character. If you're following a build guide, it will have suggestions on how to make the most from the build. If you're not, look some up that use the skill you use and see what they do to optimize it. You can use their suggestions and put your own preferences on them. Most build guides have what they think is the best endgame gear. It will undoubtedly be pricy. You have to build up to that and can get by with much cheaper. It just will not kill as fast.

You can not start mapping unless you killed Act10 Kitava and suffered second resistance penalty. If you can kill Kitava, you are absolutely fine doing white and even yellow tier maps (some harder bosses might need to be skipped).

DPS figure is very misleading, especially if you are looking at your tooltip. POB is better but it still does not give you full picture unless you know about a skill you use and caveats connected with it.

If you play softcore, it is good to do Merciless labyrint before killing Kitava. If you can deal with Izaro there, you are perfectly fine for Kitava and mapping as well. It is beneficial to clear Merciless labyrinth for your ascendancy points before killing Kitava to have easier time with gearing as you would still only have -30 to all resistances instead of -60 once you kill Kitava.
I would argue, that act10 is harder than t1 maps simply due to the difference in monster types. Monsters in a10 can be quite nasty for some builds.
