Support gems/support weapon?

I am building a fire cyclone Chieftan using Ngamahu's Flame 2H... my question is do Support Gems increase the weapons damage/abilitie, or do support gems only support linked ability gems??
For example, the random molten bursts from Ngamahu's Flame, do they become more powerful by socketed Support gems?
new to PoE and some of the mechanics/builds so any info is greatly appreciated..

Yes. Skills provided by an item will always be supported by socketed support gems and the sockets dont need to be linked to achieve that.

But you have to make sure its the right support gems, applicable to the items skill

thank you!! Just to confirm.. would Combustion Support, Fire Penetration Support, and Vicious Projectiles Support gems work in supporting the weapons abilities? thanks

Yup they do, also:
- Ele dmg with atks
- Greater Multiple Proj
- Ele Focus
- Concentrated effects
- Increased AoE

will work.
