Looking for help building for pvp

I have tried out a few of the classes and I like the idea of a beefy melee magical style character. I decided to go for Templar but I am not sure what's really effective in pvp. Reading all the different ideas and posts can make your head spin.

Are minions effective in pvp (Minion are always a good time)? Totems (I thought the dual sparks builds looked fun)? I like the in your faceness of melee so mace and shield sound fun, 2H sound a bit more fun but not sure if it's viable.

Any help or guidance for a fresh starter would be greatly appreciated. I know this takes a lot of planning but with all the options available I would like to get a good start for pvp and not waste a lot of my time and energy building a pve spec only to then have to go back and change everything for a viable pvp build.
