Was the previous name something which could have been considered inappropriate?

Well I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first one, it got reported, and GGG chose to act on the report. If you e-mail support@grindinggear.com they can confirm the reason for the name change - and, probably - the previous name. If it was inappropriate they won't offer to undo the change, though. This was done by them intentionally and they'd a reason for doing it.
