Inquiry about league starter builds

Can anyone write a short explanation of what is generally expected from a league starter build? DPS/clear wise and in progression terms.

Anything that will work without uniques and 6l is fine.

what does "work" mean exactly? thats what my question is directed towards. "work" as in killing everything all the way to shaper, clearing yellow maps comfortably, having KB level of mapping speed or what?

That is subjective to the person playing the build.

For me it means comfortably clearing yellow maps with a 5L. I figure if you can get someone there you can get enough currency to do some other cheap builds to go further. Anything that can be scaled up to do more from there is a plus as well.
A league starter build for me must follow these rules:
- No need to trade during the campaign
- Easy 1 or 2 attacks/spells build
- Being able to clear yellow maps with a 5L
- No mandatory or out-of-price items
- Great survivability

A league starter is first of all a build to gather currency and items. I'm an SSF player so I don't care much about currency but you gotta be able to play it for a few weeks without saying to yourself "shit I'm too mana dependent" or "damn I'm dying too much because of lack of gear".

That's why there are classes more built around league starting: Marauder (Jugg and Chietain), Witch (Ele spell or Necro), Templar (Hiero mostly but Inq ok) or to a lesser extent Duelist (more gear dependant). I wouldn't recommend starting with a Shadow or Ranger due to the lack or defensive options early.

Basically I play these builds at the start of the season:
- AW Chieftain
- Cyclone Slayer
- Melee Skeleton Necro
- 2H Sunder Jugg
- Glad Max Block

This league will be trap-oriented so I'll start with both a Saboteur and a Magma Orb Elementalist on SSF. Hope this helps.

thank you for useful information :) this is the kind of answer I was hoping to get
I find Gladiator and Juggernaut are the cheapest dudes. Either one is good for starting, you can clear maps and build up currency without having to spend much. They are both kind of boring, a more fun one would be Slayer Flicker Strike, you could clear maps super fast but it will cost you more.

LUL, first time SSF and i was pretty safe all the time as ED trickster shadow -got acrobatics/phase acrobatics for act4+ and MoM for maps, even i played first few tiers of maps with 3L ED setup because i was fine and it was fun to see it all works as pure SSF.
About other starter builds i can insta-suggest chieftain totemer -Flame Totems or another skill, depending on changes we will see -atm i play incinerate totemer chieftain with just 5L and 5k hp /no defenses outside totem leech/ in red maps and its damn satisfying and fun+ cheap /actually semi-SSF, all i had to buy were 2 cheap uniques cuz rng sux/. IMO scion totemer could be ok.
Firestorm is also ok and cheap to start with but not that fast and meta.
In 3.3 old school ignite prolif Detonate Dead or Flameblast could be good again for those who dont like traps i guess. :)
Slow down for a minute to enjoy the beauty around us.

He didn't say it was impossible. I agree the Shadow and Ranger are the hardest if you are starting with no currency. Also, maybe you were doing it when the Trickster had his energy shield buff, which is now gone. He still has defense but I don't know if you can use it as easy or as cheap as before.
