...about PoE, scamming, its people and culture
" As someone who is pretty new to POE scene, I can say the trade system is not fine. It is easily scammed, especially against new players. There is little information on how it works or possible scams. Things as simple as the item isn't exactly what I asked for would be a start. For example, lets say someone is selling a leveling unique. They can post a top quality one for a huge discount. They can then jump on new players by placing a different unique in the window thinking they wouldn't take the time to make sure the item is exactly the same stats. Its also a giant pain trying to message people to get to the trade aspect. I've leveled up a character to get some currency. I want to start a new character to try something different out and add variety into a repetitive grind. It can take easily an hour or 2 trying to trade for items before I start. This is not a product of a fine system. This is a system being intentionally difficult because it can be. Both of these problems can easily be handled by the game system and by a computer, eliminating human error entirely, of which there can be a lot. Sometimes it is scams. Other times it is honest mistakes. Now we also have people, maybe new players as well, that are trying to sell items and accidentally mess up. Now they are being called scammers and sometimes verbally attacked over a honest mistake. Something easily solvable by having the system do it. At the end of the day, this is just a game. We all play it to have fun and be a distraction from our lives. The trading detracts from that enjoyment. It also does so intentionally. That is poor design and a poor product. |

I feel for you. It's happened to me in the early days of MMO's but I chalked it up to lesson learned and have never had it happen again, in RL or in game. You just have to be super careful. There seem to be many people trying to scam honest folk out of their hard earned money - fake IRS calls, Nigerian scams, Ponzi schemes, lemon cars that break down a week past warranty, etc...
So it's no suprise they are here in PoE as well. I've been there. Not personally in PoE but when I was still young and yet to realize the world is full of nasty greedy people. Or rather I knew but just never had crossed paths with that shady lot. Yes they are the tiny minority but no matter you should always look at every prefix, suffix, affix, and every word before you click "buy". I'm sure rampant scammers and cheaters are dealt with in GGG but the law is pretty clear - once you sign (click) you own it. Mostly. Still I would let GGG know and once the proverbial desk becomes cluttered with complaints I'm sure they'll try to take action within the confines of the EULA agreement. And knowing GGG they'd probably go one step further. As Mike Brady once said Caveat Emptor Truer words were never spoken... Great Builds [3.1] Used By Me or Guild Mates:

I honestly have no idea if I was scammed or not. I've made so little trades because of the stuff I've read on here. I can see though how easily it is for new players to be taken advantage of and how this reputation that trading is getting, can be bad for new players.
I can say that if I had been scammed, it likely would have just caused me to walk away. POE is definitely an investment in time to get to places. If that investment isn't fun or isn't worth the time spent, there are plenty of things to do. Personally, I feel that POE has so much going for it. Its a shame to see trading being treated as it currently is. |

" Semantics? Not a single thing I said had to do with the definition of the terms we were discussing. It was an argument against your logic, if there was any, and clearly you have no retort to the issues I brought up. If you're shown an item to purchase and don't check it, and then accept that item for your currency, then if the item isn't the one you wanted that is your mistake (and quite possibly the sellers as well). If it was done maliciously by the salesperson it was your fault for not avoiding getting taken advantage of. It's always your responsibility and the system in place already protects any person who takes the time to actually verify what they're purchasing. No need for more protection than that. |
