Animate Guardian + Gear with Abyss Jewels?

I have a question about Animate Guardian. Are you able to equip gear onto the Guardian that has Abyssal Jewels socketed? I know you can't animate active skill gems but if you can animate gear with abyssal jewels this could create a strong interaction with Tombfist*. Tombfist would effectively be a 10% more mod which could help loads with bosses, that in addition to things like Dying Breath could make Animate Guardian a very useful part of summoners kit.
