Vaal Breach gem mechanics

So, I've been trying to get some more detailed information about the Vaal Breach. So far, I haven't been able to get some of the information I want.

Few questions:
- How long does Breach actually last? Is it random? If so, what is the minimal and maximum duration?
- Can the duration be increased by any means?
- Does the pack size from maps increase the amount of monsters from Breaches?

I don't know how long the inactive breach lasts, but the opened one should last 30-60 seconds, getting closer to the maximum the more breach monsters you kill.

Pack size should increase breach monster density, at least afaik.

Question:

I still don't understand the viability of Vaal Breach. What build actually uses it? Why do you want more crap in your face that doesn't drop loot or give exp?

Is it for:

- charging up flasks?
- charging up.....erm.....charges?

What build uses it - Vaal Spark?

on-kill and on-hit effects

for example Atziri's Splendour gives +100 life and mana on kill

can't get that against a boss that doesn't have adds

Try out poison Abyssal Cry before it gets nerfed once again.
