Esh's Visage wording
I made the mistake of thinking Esh's Visage works if you don't have low life AND low mana. Definitely my fault, but I spent several hours leveling a character for build with it in mind (although the build was garbage regardless). It seems at least a few other people have been confused by the wording, so I'd like to suggest it say "Chaos damage does not bypass Energy Shield while you have neither Low Life nor Low Mana" - I think this would make it much clearer. Hopefully it's proper PoE language, but the inclusion of the "nor" might still be enough of a difference if it's not.

Hmm...
isn't NOT + OR already nor. If someone tells you to not take medicine with alcohol or other drug, would you take that medicine with alcohol and every drug you can find? So NOT basically just means take the outcome of a normal or and reverse it. Chaos Damage can't bypass Energyshield while you are Low Life or Low mana. This means not Low Life/not Low Mana -> does bypass Low Life/not Low Mana -> Doesn't bypass Low Life/Low Mana -> Doesn't bypass not Low Life/Low Mana -> Doesn't bypass The opposite of this is that the only way it doesn't bypass if we add a "NOT" is when we are not Low Life or Low mana. OR is never exclusive, regardless of the N, you are confusing OR with XOR which is the exclusive version. If we use "or" in normal language we usually mean XOR, if we use "not...or" in normal language it usually is NOR not XNOR. Just an oddity of language but completly correct. If someone asks you if you want an apple or an orange you usally only get one. If someone tells you not hit or kick other people you are not fine doing both. |

The current wording is accurate, I'm not arguing against that. It's just that some people (like myself) are confused even after looking closely at it. And as you've just demonstrated, explaining why it's accurate can take some effort!

I think the confusion actually comes FROM the strict language PoE uses. When I see the unique modifier, I think of it as "Chaos damage does not bypass Energy Shield" while not (Low Life or Low Mana), and it looks to me like the "or" is the same as the "apple or orange" example. Replacing it with "nor" removes the ambiguity entirely from the two possibilities that "or" allows, and is strict in the way I (and apparently others) expect from PoE.
Although to be honest, I suppose it may be a little too much hand-holding :/ Last edited by hubot#5147 on Apr 1, 2017, 3:28:25 PM
