Crafting Items To The Max

I want to build up my white weapons to 20% ( they go to superior) and then upgrade them to rare but the game won't let me. I get the error message "this item is already equipped". What am I doing wrong? How can I get the maximum bang when crafting up a white item? Thanks.

You can't use those particular orbs on items while they are equipped. Take them off, put them in your stash or inventory, then use the orbs...

Yes, you cannot craft items while they are equipped. First drag them down from the weapon slot to your inventory where all your drops go. Then craft them. Then re-equip them again.
