He doesn't need a 120 or 144Hz refresh rate monitor. The human eye can't see much past 60. I run on a system with a GTX 1080 too, and Skylake CPU, and still run a 60HZ monitor (2560x1600).

Spoken like someone who's never played at 144Hz before. You can absolutely see past 60, diminishing returns probably being for most people at 240Hz but the difference is still there. However I doubt it makes a difference for playstyle in ARPGs, it's way more important for twitch shooters.

But please don't sound like a console user again, the human eye doesn't see in FPS so we can't say how many FPS our eyes can see. True native 240Hz monitors only just hit the market and some pro guys are saying they still want higher refresh rates
Unlike some contributors to this thread, the topic of frame rate is not as simple as some would claim. Here's a great article talking in some depth about what it all actually means: http://www.pcgamer.com/how-many-frames-per-second-can-the-human-eye-really-see/

As for POE, yes it is not optimally optimised, but then it never had the budget of a Ubisoft or EA Sports corporation behind it. 3.0 is due to make significant improvements in this space so let's wait and see.

For me personally, I will be upgrading my rig but not just for PoE, but because I'm running an old system that is past its prime. My AMD Radeon HD 6900 says hi.... very slowly! It has 1Gb of snail like power!

My motorcycle project is way behind schedule due to a very slow specialist so I've been able to save up some money for a big rig splurge! Ew, that sounds disgusting!

Also people who say 300 fps are missing again something important!
SERVER TICKRATE!

If an online game works on servers with a tickrate of 30 you basically can play the game smoothly at 30 FPS without any kind of problems.(because the game was build to be played like that)

If an online game works on servers with a tickrate of 60 and you play the game at 30 FPS you can actually lose crucial stuff. (noticeable in shooters)

If an online game works on servers with a tickrate of 60 and you play the game at 60 FPS no problem.

A game like PoE is slow in his gameplay (compared to shooters) sooo... 60 FPS in this game is more than enough.

Also many people stated this thing.
Don't upgrade your PC just for PoE, is bad optimized.
Upgrade your PC for a long term condition or budget.
You can also upgrade your PC for other games and not taking in consideration PoE at all.

You can upgrade your PC to play The Witcher 3 for the minimum requirement or Mass Effect Andromeda or BF1 or Rise of the Tomb Raider, dunno there are other stuff to take in consideration of upgrading your PC than PoE.

The machine is not out yet , maybe in 2458 years .
I play The Witcher 3, get about 50 to 75 FPS maxed out eye candy..But by god this game just F^%$ks my PC ..crashes a lot..and just seems laggy. I guess it is, what it is. ;-(

Are you sure cause i'mt not so sure.
Again DX11 is being optimised for Xbox One.
Hardware Specs / Wiki : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_One

And here are some examples how broken DX11 is. ;)

Why people are so, but sooooo misinformed?
Yeah DX11 is a total fail for PoE at this kind of hyper broken optimization.
Anyway DX11 was never made for Xbox One, from the beginning it was made for PC and it is like 3 times better than DX9.
DX12 comes with his own visual improvements and better performance, also works like in windows on Xbox One (but this is another story and i think you can't comprehend it).

Another thing is PoE was build on DX9 so you will never have the new juicy stuff added from DX10 to DX11, only the video processing is changing, nothing more, nothing less.

3.0, POE optimized for AMD! (gnehehehehe)
It WAS running flawlessly on mine until the last few patches. Now I get occasional crashes but they seem to be random.
Censored.
