Are elemental bearers secondary damage?

I was mapping on Frankfurt today (200+ms), desynced in a pack of flame bearers and my support didn't die. He had Aegis & max block. I always had thought bearers were secondary damage and ingored block/aegis. Can someone confirm if it triggers on spell block and if aegis recover es from it? I just don't see how I lived unharmed, unless luck maybe.

If i find another pack tomorrow I can test but it does make me a bit nervous cuz the guy's on EHC.

You can test it on just one or two explosions - check if your damage goes down or not.
