Sunder AoE no multiple hits?
I've been noticing that Sunder doesn't seem to do the amount of damage it should if you stack a bunch of mobs on each other; this is most clearly seen when you've got a rare mob and you gather a bunch of normal mobs (in fact, this Essence league is a great time to test). I haven't thoroughly investigated this mechanic, I've just been wondering if anyone else has noticed this as well and want to discuss whether it is a bug or some mechanic of Sunder that is not working as intended (or we believe it should).
This is likely less noticeable when you can 1 shot packs near endgame, I only noticed it lvling a newbie in HC. Let's take a common occurrence for example: Theoretically speaking Sunder does 80% of a normal mob's life and 20% of a rare's; I stack 5 normal mobs around a rare, what should happen is normal mobs all die from taking damage that deals 80% of their life + 70% of said damage from any other's shockwave. The rare should take damage that deals 20% of its life + 5*(20%*.7), for a total damage that deals 90% of its life. What actually happens is the rare takes an odd amount of damage between 30-50% (guesstimates, but nonetheless drastically different than expected). Does anyone know what the actual mechanic is for multi-hit shockwaves on one target? I'm thinking of 2 possibilities: 1. Since Sunder shockwaves don't hit their original target, maybe there's a radius where it does no damage, so stacking mobs too close won't allow certain/multiple targets to get hit by all intended shockwaves? 2. Shockwaves deal 30% less damage PER consecutive hit, therefore damage is explained by being reduced exponentially? Last bumped on Sep 8, 2016, 2:39:21 PM

You hit monster 1, every white monster is left with next to nothing, Rare takes a bit of damage.
You hit monster 2, every white monster is now dead, Rare takes another bit of Damage. Hit the rare, leave it at ~50% Life. Alternatively, if the second Hit lands on the Rare, it'll take some 35% ish of its Life as Damage. Your results seem to match expectations, to me. :) Last edited by Vipermagi#0984 on Sep 8, 2016, 10:54:24 AM

Positioning is key to Sunder. If you pay attention, it acts like a projectile in that it travels in a direction. As it travels, it deals its direct damage. Upon an enemy taking direct damage, they release a shockwave that deals the indirect damage.
Sunder is something that works best against really clumped enemies, or when you have substantial increased area of effect. Otherwise, it is useless. Assuming you have as tight of a ball of enemies you can get, you won't likely get all of the shockwaves from the white mobs because sufficient shockwaves will hit other white enemies to kill them. So those hit only by shockwaves won't generate one themselves. This is likely why you're not getting the damage you want against a rare. |
