They keep adding more defenses to it. Besides the ascendency nodes they added, they just added a reduced damage from reflect mod you can get from essence crafting.

This is something I've come around on. I'm really quite over the surprise "kill yourself" mechanics. Lightning thorns, though, is far more infuriating to me.
It can stay as a map mod. But I really wish it would go away otherwise. A comprehensive, easy on the eyes loot filter:

I really just want it to be a grimdawn mechanic or shamfully d3 reflect which is both of turning it on and off basically.
