That's a nice thing about vendors, it's a good place to look if you want half-decent sockets.

It is certaily worth to check the vendors often, if nothing else you can get a a lot chromatics from them (all 3 color linked) and what i've got quite a few in closed beta where 6 socket items (not 5L or 6L though), which you can sell back to the vendor for 7 jeweller orbs (IIRC).
And yes i guess 5L can happen as well but are really rare :) Proud 5th duelist in the Jul 1 2012 Ladder Race and in the Nov 3 2012 Solo Turbo Race :D

I found a 5L itemlevel 39 (req 24) chest in Act 3 Normal. Haven't had much luck trying to sell but it's still great for leveling.
