Cats guard your home too, albeit in a different fashion. They will seek and destroy all mice, rats, moles, squirrels and other critters.

They can also be trained to walk on a leash if you're patient or start while they are young. Also, some breeds like the Egyptian Mau will defend their humans very much like a dog will.
