Can Word of Spite Leech? Same with Vengeance?

I'm working on an Earthquake Duelist and he is being wildly successful, more than I could have hoped for. He doesn't seem to take any damage. I think what is happening is, when he gets hit, his armor, endurance charges and permanent Fortify are mitigating some of the damage and Word of Spite triggers and leeches the rest back. Except for the hardest of hits I never see his life move.
