I believe GGG said they are able to link an existing POE account to steam.

hey, little bit of info here. I did the same thing awhile back. Started with an account made on here and DLed the client, then linked my steam account and started playing through steam. It all works great, the only thing with the steam wallet is not being able to upgrade supporter packs so I generally purchase those through the poe website instead.
