How To Make A Build Guide

Greetings fellow Exiles,

I read a lot over the forums and I noticed that people who create builds often don't bother or simply just don't know how to format a guide. So I figured I'd create a short summary of tips on how to format your guides.

CHECK YOUR SPELLING

Something that is often underrated. This also applies to everything you create outside of these forums. If your spelling is on par, people will take you and your guide more seriously.

This has been scientifically proven. Whether you are a company or not, correct spelling is important.

BE CREATIVE

Use colors/images to personalize your guide. You can highlight certain sections or divide them by color depending on your intentions or importance of each section.

You can do this by using the "color" attribute inside each tag with the corresponding hash code for each color. If you don't know any hash codes, you can use this site to pick one for yourself.

Example:

[b color="#0099ff"]Title[/b]

Visual Example:
Spoiler
Title

Be careful with colors and images as the wrong combinations can make your guide look ugly.
To prevent yourself from posting something horrendous, always use the "Preview" button before you submit anything. This way you can take a look at how everything looks.

For images, the maximum recommended size is 670x500 pixels. Everything bigger than that you should resize with another program. Keep in mind that you can only post images that are hosted somewhere.

Such hosts are for example tinypic, imgur or giphy.

Also, don't use images with a big file size as this will only slow down the loading process of your guide's page.

To include a hosted image, you need to use the [img] tag at the top and include the link.
You can also embed animated gif images this way.

Example:

[img]http://i.imgur.com/jzkeVEZ.gif[/img]

Visual Example:
Spoiler
jzkeVEZ

STYLE YOUR TEXT

If you want to link to a specific page, use the [url] tag you see at the top.
A lot of people make this simple mistake when adding YouTube links or Passive Tree links.

Example:

[url]http://www.youtube.com[/url]

Visual Example:

Use this method to link to your videos or threads with a text that has a hidden link.

Example:

[url=https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1502752]My Flicker Strike Build[/url]

Visual Example:

Also use the other font style tags to style or highlight your text.

Example:

[b]Bold Text[/b]
[i]Italic Text[/i]
[u]Underlined Text[/u]

Visual Example:
Spoiler
Bold Text
Italic Text
Underlined Text

ADD ITEMS

You can post items from your characters as well. You can do so by clicking on the character portrait at the top of the page. This will open a popup window that lets you see items and characters.
To post a specific item, simply click on it. This will post a link in your post that shows the item.

Example:

[linkItem location="Weapon" character="TheEternalJuggernaut" x="0" y="0"]

Visual Example:

BUILD A STRUCTURE

Use the [spoiler] tag to minimize a long wall of text such as quotes or a longer section as this makes your guide easier to read and scroll through. Also use this method to minimize a long list of items.

Example:

[u]My Cyclone Build[/u]
[spoiler]Two Handed Edition

You can assign each [spoiler] tag a certain display text.

Example:

[spoiler="Display Text"]Text[/spoiler]
Keep in mind that a [spoiler] tag has to include text. Otherwise it won't be displayed.

Visual Example:
Display Text
Text

You can also use the [strike] tag to strike through text.

Example:

[strike]Text[/strike]

Visual example:
Spoiler
Text

To divide your guide into sections, you just simply have to include the [hr] (horizontal rule) tag.

Example:

[b]Title[/b]
[hr]
Subtitle/Text

Visual Example:
Spoiler
Title

Subtitle/Text

This will post the white horizontal line you can see which I use to divide the sections in this post.

HOW TO MAKE FILL OUT FORMS

If you want people to fill out some kind of form, you will need to create one yourself. I can show you how.

Example:

[b]THIS IS THE TITLE OF YOUR FORM[/b]
[hr]
[b]1.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]2.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]3.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]4.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]5.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]

Visual Example:
Spoiler

THIS IS THE TITLE OF YOUR FORM

1.) Your question
Spoiler
Put your answer here

2.) Your question
Spoiler
Put your answer here

3.) Your question
Spoiler
Put your answer here

4.) Your question
Spoiler
Put your answer here

5.) Your question
Spoiler
Put your answer here

You copy the code above and replace the questions. Then you let people copy your code and fill it out for you. This makes it easier to read for everybody. To do that, you will need the [code] tags and put the code of your form between them. This will show the raw code which people can then copy and paste into their reply without the need to quote your post and filter it out by themselves.

Keep in mind that the example below is what you use in your post for the people to copy, and the example above is the form you need to alter and put between those [code] tags. Everything you put between those tags will be displayed as text and will not be processed as code by the server.

Example:

[code]
[b]THIS IS THE TITLE OF YOUR FORM[/b]
[hr]
[b]1.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]2.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]3.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]4.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]
[hr]
[b]5.) Your question[/b]
[spoiler]Put your answer here[/spoiler]

[/code]

STRUCTURE YOUR INFORMATION

Place the most important information you want to present at the top of the guide and structure the rest accordingly.

most important → less important → least important

If you want to use a list to build a specific structure, you can do so by using the [list] tag and adding items to the list with [li].

Example:

My List
[list]
[li]List item[/li]
[li]List item[/li]
[li]List item[/li]
[li]List item[/li]
[/list]

Visual Example:

I hope you find this guide useful. I will update this if I missed something or if I have new things to add.

Cheers.

Resolved thanks to Support.
Spoiler
There seem to be some server problems. The correct code isn't displayed. WTF

EDIT: Talking about the last section in my post. After the list. There's some code missing that somehow doesn't make it from preview to submit for some reason. Contacted support already. Reposting it several times didn't help either.

...and that differs from what I said here, how? That's a very good example for a good guide.

What do you think about my guide:

"Is there such a thing as an absolute, timeless enemy? There is no such thing, and never has been. And the reason
is that our enemies are human beings like us. They can only be our enemies in relative terms."

General build explanation/information is missing. Something that is very important.

Also, format your links as I said in this guide. Aka. put the YouTube links as text with hidden URL instead of URL and then text.

Spell check is something you should invest some time into as well.

Structure your guide according to importance. Take a look at what you think should be seen before or after each section.

Note: My own guide follows these rules but isn't the best example right now, as it is still unfinished.

Thanks, already fixed links and will work on General build explanation, section

You are welcome.

Thanks to support this issue is now resolved.

Instead of [*] for list items, it is here [li][/li] instead! Works now properly. Yaay!
