Star Wars- Spoiler Alert!

If this were the very first Star Wars, I would give it high marks. I think Rey was well done, and expect that a lot of the 'explanation' for her character's abilities was left on the storyboards, though I hope some will make it into longer extended versions. Finn worked for me and I think Finn would have been perfect if they had portrayed him as younger and more wide eyed and amazed.

Bad guys.... With the exception of Vader, the Star Wars series has never done a good job of creating evil bad guys. Excluding Vader, the various sith lords have been more like sith scouts imo, and the New Siths on the Block are more of the same.

I can understand the need to reacquaint/introduce people to the Star Wars mematics, but even so, the plot was anemic, lacking urgency as much as it lacked originality.

I guess there was music in the film. If the director's aim was to be transparent with the soundtrack, they succeeded.

Effects.

Grrrrrr

They didn't just drop the ball, they sliced and deflated it.

Gone are Star Wars trademark camera shots where the enormity and intricacy of the Star Wars world in all its grimey wonder is detailed so intimately and lovingly that it verges on technological porn. Sure, we still get a Star Destroyer, but instead of a lingering slowly panning view that fills the viewer with awe, we get the PG-13 quick peek that feels more like a budget decision than artistic expression.

I'm sure Disney didn't cut corners, but most of the cinematography has that "good enough" look to it. Its not so much a lack of over the top wonders, as it is a very real lack of immersion. Instead a new glimpse of the Star Wars universe, we got the Strategic Disney Initiative.

Overall I would give it a 6.5/10. I think the primary flaws are not because they didn't try hard enough, but that they tried to cover too much ground in a single film. I know it wouldn't work for theater profits, but this should have been a three hour movie, with Death Star III plot left for later and instead give the audience a very good sense of who the characters are and why we should root for them or despise them.

I went into the theater with no real expectations, and came out of the theater entertained but dismayed.
It just didn't have that feeling where the worlds created were so real that you wanted to be part of them.

I would gladly suffer Jar Jar Ewok hybrids rather than see the Star Wars sense of 'being there' reduced to deluxe cardboard dioramas.

*Sigh*

Those who dislike force awakens can rejoice, George Lucas was on Charlie Rose the other night and he compared selling SW to Disney as selling his children to white slavers. Smooth George, smooth.

Pretty spot on. He was going on n on about how people didn't get it and it left a bad aftertaste. He says that's the reason he never made more after the prequels.

Here's the whole thing if anyone's even interested

This is eye-opening. Reminded me of how influential Coppola's wife was during the insane filming of Apoc Now.

never underestimate the power of the two towers behind your back.
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
It was pretty shocking just how close to a new hope it was. Anything not directly drawn from a new hope was contrived and unimaginative. But probably the most successful movie ever so what do I know?
as soon as he stepped out onto that catwalk with kylo, I knew he was finished

a non-jedi does not simply walk away from an encounter with a sith
It was alright, i kinda liked it.

Had made sure to hear nothing and told people to shut up if they almost gave me spoilers, then i saw it today. Was better than i had expected.

It was more of an actionmovie and less about the jedi teachings, and as to be expected just another go at capturing the star wars universe for the franchise that disney bought. But they handled it well, i was entertained.
I am the light of the morning and the shadow on the wall, I am nothing and I am all.
meh

anyone who uses the dark side of the force is a sith and anyone who uses the good side of the force is jedi

:P
