It's generally fine to play during these times - there hopefully won't be additional lag or deaths due to this. It's just that when the maintenance occurs, the realm may abruptly become unavailable.

(As I post this, we are also running a 30 minute countdown to some fast realm maintenance that we're performing ourselves - it'll last for a few minutes).

It's a mistake that they refer to patch notes - it's not meant to say that.
