Would you prefer this game to be based on player skill instead of random events?

Right now PoE is almost entirely based on random events.
1. Monster damage, e.g. crits one-shotting you
2. Defenses: block, (spell-)dodge, evasion
3. Your own damage
4. Item drops
5. Crafting
6. Passive tree, With the addition of jewels
7. Access to endgame content (is there any other major game out there which is gating content behind RNG?)
8. The so-called challenges in warbands/tempest are either mindless grinds or based on luck

On the other hand you have games like Dark Souls, where there is almost 0% randomness. Instead progress through the game is entirely based on player skill and knowledge (e.g. SL1 naked runs).

If you compare that to non-video games, PoE would be the equivalent of playing on a slot machine in a casino, whereas Dark Souls would be similar to chess.

Would you prefer PoE to be based on challenging gameplay mechanics or would you quit the game if they changed it?
Welcome to poe! Your progression is almost completely based on knowledge so don't be afraid to ask questions and enjoy the ride!
POE is a ARPG not a mobo or rts game. It's about powering your character up and leveling, loot hunt.

Conceptually - yes, but it can't happen, it would almost be easier to make a new game than rework PoE from the ground up to fit that bill. Just enjoy the game for what it is, if you can, and if you can't it sure won't change for me or you.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

No, but not because I don't prefer a game that rewards skillful play. It's because GGG has clearly shown us what they consider a skill-play challenge and an appropriate risk/reward balance.

The end result would be fighting Malachi in a phone booth with all whites equipped, to drop a Veil of the Night.

You're not going to have fun if you french fry when you should have pizza'd.

Some parts would be easy to change. For example to block you would have to raise your shield manually via a skill (Not saying it would nessesarily be more fun to play the game this way). You can already evade projectile attacks manually.

You could easily replace the RNG gated endgame with a mechanic where you get access to higher lvl (aka more difficult) maps by proving you can handle the current lvl. For example if you full clear all lvl74 maps with all mods, you get access to lvl75 maps.

But i guess people here enjoy mindless grinds without any skill or challenge, something even a bot can do...

Dunno about that, directional blocking and dodging can be fairly awkward in an isometric game, can't really think of any that does it well, it's pretty much reserved for third person games.

There is no skill involved in ARPG games , the sooner you get it through your head the better .
R.I.P 4.B.
I would prefer this game to be easier in both ways OP mentioned.
