Scour orb for gems

Gems are items. Of course high-level ones aren't usable by low-level characters. That's why quests give staple gems as rewards, and rare gems are rare. They would have to be exponentially rarer if you could just stash your gems over to an alt and back whenever you change characters, with no penalty.

Gems maintaining levels isn't a problem; it's a feature of the system. Sure, they're improved versions, but they're too improved for your lower characters. You shouldn't be able to un-improve them at will just to save you the effort of finding another gem.

I feel like i haven't properly explained my reservations, but GGG seem to have made up their minds on the issue anyway. We'll see how it plays out.

Indeed - this came up in discussion in the office today. It's very likely that there will be a recipe that lets you downlevel a gem by one level for some currency items. At the moment we have it implemented as gem + Orb of Scouring, but who knows what it'll end up as when 0.9.5 is done.

A whole gem + orb just to downgrade it one level?

Don't you think thats a little much?

At some point there will need to be a stop on the number of currency items. They already cover a significant part of my inventory! :)

Maybe scouring covering all item-types and more cross-category orbs to keep the number down.
I appear to be living in "Romance Standard Time". That has to be good! :)

Unless i'm misunderstanding, you get the gem back, so it basically just costs you the scouring orb. One thing they could do is let you choose the level it gets downgraded to. Or leave it as is (-1 level), as you could dump a bunch of scouring into it to get it down to where you want.
