The book Last Legends of Earth by the author in the title features a multidimensional city gate - basically an alley and hundreds of individual doors, only one of which leads to the city itself. It would be neat to make town portals into an actual structure with more expansive lore and maybe new features associated.


For instance, a way to click a certain portal type and be launched into a random shared map with a couple other players. enemies could ramp depending on number of players, up to them to find each other and survive. Or possibly a portal which sends you to a random play field. Build a few powerful named or boss level NPCs that are associated with certain maps. That way you would have to build a party with no idea who or what you are going in to kill. Add an incredibly random cow level, where cows slowly advance upon you then explode unexpectedly.
