WARNING when linking PoE website to Steam account?

I am trying to log my PoE account through steam. When I click the confirmation link in my email I am prompted on this website with this:
WARNING: The Steam account associated with this request is already linked to a Path of Exile account. Linking it to this account will delete the original account and any characters or purchases you have made. Are you sure you want to link your Steam account to your Path of Exile account? Y / N I have never linked my steam account to this website before. If I click yes will I lose all the characters on my PoE account? |

This message will often be received when account has been accidentally linked with Steam in the past and forgotten, or when used in conjunction with another Path of Exile account. To clarify this issue, please contact us at support@grindinggear.com and provide one-two character names associated with your account, as your current account does not appear to have any characters.
