Leveling a Freezing Pulse Templar - Any Suggestions for Good Leveling Active Attack Gem?

Freezing Pulse is meh by it's own and I was wondering if there was some gem that feels good and scales off elemental damage nodes that I can use until I get FP accelerated with some support gems and attributes from gear which might not be for a while because I'm trying to speed through the parts I can but when I got to bosses I eat dirt, mostly.

Spark is nice but it doesn't pierce naturally.
Any nice ones that don't need chained support gems to feel good and work well are welcome.
