Leagues

When you create a character in Path of Exile, you choose a league for that character to exist in. We expect and encourage most players to play in the default league, but other leagues exist for specific play styles or events.

Characters can only see and interact with other characters in the same league. In this way, each one is its own isolated economy. The default league is extremely large and hence acts as a general economy for all characters that were not created in a specialist league. All characters in a league have access to the same shared stash pages.

Competition

Each league has its own set of ladder rankings. We’ll be frequently creating short term leagues that last varying durations (a day, a weekend, a week, etc) with item rewards for the highest placed characters on the ladder at the end of the league. There are leagues that end once a specific goal has been met (a race to level 90, for example).

League competitions are another way for players to get rewarded for their play skill and to be competitive with other players as an alternative to PvP.

Completion

There are a few permanent long term leagues including the default “standard” and “hardcore” leagues. All other leagues have a duration value and a parent league. When the duration is over, all characters in that league become part of the parent league.

Whenever any league ends, its characters are all converted back to its parent league. This way, no one loses the character they were leveling (it just ends up in a less restricted economy/ladder than the one it was initially being played in).

Game Modes

Leagues are able to apply a different set of game rules to their players. For example, increased monster difficulty, world PvP, permadeath or various "Ironman" rules.

We have many plans for interesting game modifiers that leagues can apply, but one rule is clear – they must only make the game harder. Because characters transfer back to the parent league when a league ends, it is important that the character’s journey to its current status was equivalent or more difficult than gameplay in the parent league.

Paid Leagues

In addition, we plan to allow guilds or groups of players to pay for the creation of their own league with a choice of game rule modifiers. Only players invited by the people who paid for the league can create characters in these private leagues. This option helps cater towards any groups of players who want to play online together but don’t want their playgroup to have access to items traded from external players.

Example Leagues

The following are examples of leagues that we are working on designing. Feedback and ideas are greatly appreciated - we're very keen to hear what you think on the forums.

Hardcore

Typically, “hardcore mode” in action RPGs involves permadeath. A character killed in this mode cannot be accessed any more. In Path of Exile, slain hardcore characters revert to the parent non-hardcore league. This system encourages non-hardcore players to try the hardcore game mode, while still permanently removing hardcore characters from the economy when they die.

Ironman

In Ironman, players are unable to trade with vendors or refill their flasks in town. Mana regeneration is disabled by default. Players are encouraged to band together and manage their resources in order to survive.

Cut-throat

The cut-throat leagues appeal to the niche of players who demand the most hardcore gaming experience possible. In this mode, all world areas are public, with full PvP enabled by default. Slain characters drop all their items upon death. This game mode can also be combined with Hardcore to create an even more unforgiving world.

Attrition

An attrition league is a short duration league that starts with a fixed number of players and eliminates the player with the lowest amount of experience at periodic intervals. For example, a 24 hour attrition league might start with 100 players and eliminate one player per 12 minutes after a four hour initial leveling period. Players would be able to see how close to elimination they are on an on-screen ladder display.

Concerned about the cut-throat league.
If you cant handle the cut throat league, just stay out of it, go play normal. Dont try to whine on something thats made like this when there is another option. God sake..
As a ex Diablo 2 player this is just what I want! Kill or be killed! :D

I'm going to share my opinion about the problems PoE might encounter with the Cut-Throat league, without reading every post (so sorry in advance if you see a dejavu post :>)

So in other MMO's gear is just items that benefit you in terms of HP,Accuracy,MP,Attack,Defense,Dodge...etc
But what is hard in PoE is the fact that the socket/gem skill system. Hopefully you don't drop skill gems when you die (despite full loot). Even though you keep your skill gems, you've to still find yourself the right gear with the right sockets before using them? (sorry if im wrong about this. you need a right coloured slot for the coloured skill gem right?)
So that is quite a hassle, this makes it tough for classes like the Witch or other casters focused classes to get back to their feet.

I am perfectly fine with the cut-throat concept of non instanced (yayer!) and full loot drop ( I always wanted to play darkfall for that reason), But i think GGG needs to find a balanced way with the full loot drop with skill/gems system. For certain classes. But then again, if its FULL loot and you lose absolutely everything. I guess thats rather fair then :P

but please keep a cut-throat style league available. pvp and free loot 24/7 yay!

i dont get what ur asking for, get back on ur feet?
When you die, ur character is dead, go make a new one. Start over. Why you wanna recover anything? Either you live or you die. Thats the whole point, to stay on ur alert all time, not let anyone get the best of you. If they do, you have to start over. There is no recovery. Didnt you play Hardcore in Diablo 2?

uhhh... lol this is a thread about Cut-throat league not hardcore O_O
As a uo pretram and sb vet.. Ty for cuthroat...

Things you will find in this league..

The Zerg
The pk
The anti
The care bear.

Pick your side, know your role. If you don't know these terms, this league set is probably not for you. If you don't know your role, you will soon after the league starts.. For the pre release care bears, please don't ruin this dream come true for the hardcore pvpers that have been waiting to relive the true glory days of hardcore pvp.. Please notice how I termed this hardcore pvp..

If you want to make a suggestion to the devs, do it thusly...

Please "add" and second type of cut throat pvp league. Call it sratch throat or carebear throat league or something, but don't let my whining take away from truly hardcore pvp or those who have been waiting years for it's revival... Also, please add pandas and other cute creatures that I can play with while I wonder why this second league is so boring...

Nothing else to see here... Move along now...
im prob a care bear when it comes to this style, I dont like the idea of me spending long long amounts of hours/time in farming/questing for gears to just turn around and lose it all to some punk kid in pvp, reminds me of runescape and ill prolly avoid this mode completly and if i cant avoid it and im forced into it, then ill just stop playing or wont start in the first place.
lol at the runescape thing..

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.”

Thank you betaplaya!
looters should be labeled as Asshats
I really like the idea to go and kill of everything of any level on hardcore ..until ill be cut down ...

That will be a sad day indeed :(
question about this cut-throat league:

I know that there, when you die you lose all your equips (and if it's HC as well you go to the default league the short way). But two things I don't understand.

1st, towns will be safe? Or you can be attacked even in town?

2nd, how will people prevent a group of pkers working together to stop other people from playing at all? like half of the group campin on Twilight Strand and the rest on Terraces and killing all the level 1's before they can even get 1 drop? That would ruin a bit the league no? And with enough *evil* a guild can have the league for themselves, taking turns to camp those 2 zones 24/7. It should not even need a lot of players, 2 witches with aoe's and/or rangers with multishot are enough to keep all the level 1's from reaching shore encampment....
