game freezing with disconnects to login screen

First off Awesome game! Thank you so much for making it.

I played months back and decided to return for the 1mHC race. I had my character ready to go at the start last Friday and had a PoE stream open. When the race started I noticed I would get occasional game freezes. These would last from 1~5 seconds. Sometimes I would get kicked back to the login screen where it would say "unexpected disconnect occurred." Other times the game would go back to normal after the freeze. A few hours in I frozen during a fight and logged back into to a standard league char.

At first I thought maybe it was high server load because it was the first day of the new leagues, but I noticed the streamer I was watching wasn't having any connection issues.

I didn't play again until Monday. I made a new HC character and played roughly 50 hours from Monday through about midday Friday with no freezing/logout issues. In fact I left my client running logged in overnight and it didn't disconnect the entire week.

Then about 3pm local time friday (UTC-8) I froze again and died. After a minute or so of collecting my thoughts I rerolled.

For about the next 6 hours of play I was seeing lots of 1-5 game freezes and disconnects back to the login screen. Eventually I started playing with a friend of mine for safety because I was having so many issues and he wasn't having similar issues. I probably disconnected no fewer than a dozen times in those 6 hours.

So now I was curious what the problem was so I did some testing.

+I ensured windows was updated
+I rebooted my computer
+I rebooted my router
+my computer is connected directly to my modem (no router) and i'm the only device connected.
+I don't let TSRs run in the background and I verified via task manager that nothing but windows services were running. I had no other programs besides PoE open. Not skype, not chrome, no auto updaters, I even disabled microsoft security essentials. I don't use a 3rd party AV program.

I ran the game again with the same issues.

+I copied the game to my non-SSD to a USB flash drive and tried again. Same results. Although the game does load up substantially faster from the USB drive!

I then loaded a program to check GPU load, temps, etc and ran PoE. Temps were all normal and load was normal. Everytime I would freeze I would alt-tab to the desktop after being logged out and didn't see any rogue processes in task manager.

I then ran wireshark to check all my TCP/UDP traffic over my NIC and to see what the server IP address was. I verified there was no other traffic running over my network card.

I then ran Winmtr for an extended period of time to look for high pings and/or packet loss. The numbers look fine:

Out of 100k+ pings only 2 (two) packets were lost. average ping to the server is very low at 63ms and the worst pings were only a fraction of a second to any of the hops for the entire time it ran.

Thus I'm at a loss to understand what is causing my issue. Is this a known issue? Are others experiencing similar problems? Does anyone have additional insight they could share?

thanks!
Sorry to say but whilst it's great that you have done a large test you have not tested the right server...you have tested the patching server and not the game server, if you follow ionfaces addition to the guide it'll tell you where to get the correct IP address to test and tun it again whilst you are having the problem

Hi Donm3,

Thanks for the kind words and I'm sorry to hear this is happening.

As lagwin1980 said, your WinMTR doesn't appear to be to the correct server, but hopefully one using the IPs from the thread he linked will give us something to work with.

With that in mind, does this issue persist if you switch to a different gateway?

Thanks for the quick replies. I read through the thread. I wasn't sure if i should tracert to www.pathofexile.com or US.login.pathofexile.com after reading that thread.

www.pathofexile.com resolves to 173.192.44.22-static.reverse.softlayer.com
US.login.pathofexile.com resolves to patch101.pathofexile.com

If i look at the tail of my client.txt file I see "Connecting to instance server at" entries for IPs in the last 15 minutes or so:
37.58.67.213
37.58.67.210
173.192.25.28
192.155.227.208
173.192.25.28
192.155.227.210

Can you give me some guidance as to which IP addy I should be running the Tracert to?

I will try another gateway. That's for that bit of advice!
When you log in and start playing it will be the most recent one right down the bottom.

I just now logged in via the american gateway and the last entry in the log file says connecting to instance on 173.192.25.23 which resolves to patch101.pathofexile.com at this point i'm idling in a3m town. I also verified this via the timestamps in the logfile.

I then went to the marketplace via the waypoint and the log file said I connected to 192.155.227.210 which resolves to 192.155.227.210-static.reverse.softlayer.com

I then used the waypoint to return to a3m town and the log file says I connected to 173.192.25.23 which again is patch101.pathofexile.com

So which IP address should I be running the tracert to?

Hi donm3,

I recommend just starting with the US gateway, and leaving it running for about 300 packets, preferably while the disconnection occurs.

The WinMTR reports you posted there weren't run for long enough for us to identify if anything was happening.

ok i did as you suggested. what do i do next?
You provided a lot of good details in your OP but not your system specs.

The behavior sounds like something started to interfere. The report above doesn't really show anything significant I think and you have actually excluded your router by directly connecting to your modem right? Have you also rebooted your modem?

What I would do if I were you - and I realize this might not be possible - is to test the game on another computer. This way you could isolate the problem either to the network or network components or to your current computer.

Of course asking you to do a clean install of Windows is a bit much too ask, but maybe you can try to disable security software on your computer and close as many running processes as possible?

Another suggestion would be to keep an eye on your event viewer to see if you can find anything when those freezes are occurring.
