Melee is fine to start with on a first char. You will not hit a gear wall until the end of cruel and your build probably won't make it that far no matter which road you take. On most gear items you want life and then resistances. Have fun!

Main things to know about playing PoE is the extreme RNG that is used for all random game elements, the high amount of desync and rubberbanding for many zones and skills, and the extreme imbalances. On the plus side is the great build diversity and theory crafting, high re-playability, and great player community and support. Somewhere in the middle is the high grind time and low rewards at the high levels (level 50+).
