outline - optional please

The outline / highlight of monsters (red) and players (green).
May I ask what on earth is this??
It looks really silly, especially when zoomed in.

It takes away the grim atmosphere.

I understand that the odd player may feel attached to this outlines so I am only asking to make it optional please.
