Question about mind-set for new players

It really depends on the guide you follow, I guess.

There are some detailed guides around which explain the synergy and mechanics at hand and others which stay focused on the needs of people already knowing those mechanics. The game has a lot mechanics which are not recorded well enough in-game so there are some traps for new players.

I'd say best way to go into this game is going by Archetypes.

Want a mage? Start as Witch and stay near the starting area.
Want a warrior? Marauder, go go go!
