Sword and Board

I've been playing as a marauder and I'm still very early game and kind of trying to get my plan for a build together. So far, practically every marauder guide I've seen recommends 2h, so I'm wondering how viable is sword and board in this game? I've been thinking of doing a sword and board mace wielding marauder and putting all my passive skill points into life and life regen, then getting life leech and blood magic. Would this be a viable build?

im using a 1 hander+shield currently lv 49 and working nicely
