I think crossbows, perhaps even the one-handed kind, could be a decent compromise. That, and you can actually imagine incorporating them into the game without massive passive tree revisions, by allowing them to piggyback on bow nodes.

Guys, this is the same issue as dual X-Bows.
How do you reload them in a way that makes it even REMOTELY realistic accounting for all the attack speed bonuses you can obtain in PoE? A very slow 2-handed cannon or 2-handed crossbow/ballista with a quick reloading animation would make 1000% more sense than a 1-handed weapon. Not only pistols but also muskets are needed, crossbows (both 1h and 2h), glass orbs (for magical stuff), and grenades (17th or 18th century military explosives).
