0 FPS "freeze lags" for several seconds.
So to explain the issue or what it looks like. Pull some mobs and its gonna look like a Print screen version of the game. Game freezes for around 1-3 seconds and then it resumes. If its freezes when you are on the move you will unfreeze at the spot that you were initially trying to reach.
To sum it up. It makes it damn near impossible to play HC. Been tested on and reproduced on the following machines: Stationary i7 16gb ram gtx 780 ssd Laptop i7 16gb ram 7970m ssd Ive tried win7, win8 and win8.1. Swapped the hdd. A total of 3 different newly formatted ssd to take that out of account as a problem. The newest drivers and stepping backwards to the latest 3 in total. I have also tested different Internet connections including fiber, adsl and 4g mobile. This problem cannot be reproduced in any other game during equal or worse circumstances. When the game gets back into movement you can use the f1 command and see you have a 0 fps counter for the same amount of time as the game has frozen. Sound thats inbound into the game also freezes. Other stuff like music from a source outside the game will work fine. Skype etc still works so its not loss of connection in general. Please if anyone know what to do. Toss in a reply. Thx in advance.
Can you post a dxdiag export (the "Save all information" button) into a spoiler tag on the setup? It's odd that this is the first time I've experienced an issue like you're describing yet you get it on 2 separate machines. I've seen some people with FPS problems and stuttering, but nothing like the 1 to 3 seconds you're describing.
Are you using Steam or the Classic client? Have you added any parameters to the shortcut or launch options? Default Path of Exile install?
" I have to admit i didnt even think about running the game as a standalone instead of running it through Steam. I started playing a couple of months ago before Steam was implemented and afaik i didnt have these issues back then. Ill give it a try with the stand alone client. Nothing is added to the shortcuts or launch options. V-sync is on. Ill post the dxdiag uninstall steam and get the stand alone and then ill post an update.

Also, you might want to try updating your graphics drivers.. they're a bit old.

I can confirm this problem - I have exactly the same issue, too. It happens regardless of major activity as well, eg. browsing the stash. It will not happen within the first (8-15) minutes after having logged in a character, however.
Comparable configuration as well: i7 (Sandy, though), GTX780, 16GB & Win7x64. 24 hours ago, this hasn't ever happened. Fortunately, I can recall exactly what me system & I did prior to "this" happening. In particular this includes the most recent (yester-/todays) updates of the Steam client & the current nVidia driver package (334.89 WHQL), including GeForce Experience. Maybe you had one of these updates as well, mini_zeta? I will do my testing rollbacks & keep testing if it still occurs tomorrow and keep you posted in case I succeed.
I'd be interested if it happens to you using the Classic non-Steam client.
| |
I ve the exact same problem as mini_zeta. i ve noticed that my hdd activity always spikes up at the same time my fps drops. i got the problem since i bought a new pc with windows 8, figuered that was the problem but i am clueless atm.
i am not using steam btw Last edited by DantesVengeance on Feb 20, 2014, 4:56:29 PM

Now I've finally finished some extensive testing. And -at least for me- I think I have found the little troublemaker.
From the start: •Removing GeForce Experience improved some things, just not for these nasty PoE spikes ;-) (FPS limiter settings finally saving again, yay :) ) •Whether using the classic standalone or the Steam client didn't change anything (as did verifying game data) •Deleting the standard nVidia profile for pathofexile/-steam.exe didn't effect spiking, either •Clearing overpopulated PoE logs and caches: nothing •Changing resolutions, upscaling, downscaling: no effect to spiking. (btw, there seems to be a windows timer problem left in the client: using windowed FS improves display "smoothness" plentyfold) After fiddling around with all sorts of settings it finally worked for me to simply disable postprocessing. More even, after that seemed to have worked (until now, at least *g*), I placed my char into a busy town and started switching PP on and off regularly. I managed to get the poe-steam-exe to crash with this, getting steam to popup that it failed to fetch "some" data from the file postprocess.fx. Sorry, Drakier, I searched for Steam having logged the exact output on my PC, it has only produced a system event entry to log a general application termination - or I'm too blind to find it... Disabling PP smoothed network latency in populated towns as well, not that it mattered :P Easy to give it a try and see if it works for you as well.
@XolMan this didn't fix it for me however it seems like the freezes occur less frequent with postprocessing disabled. Also i think the freezes only appear when something happens for the first time like first time opening a stash tab or first time casting molten shell.

" Theese are the drivers that i ran on the nvidia 780 machine: 327.23 331.65 msi 334.89. I have played for a few hours on the standalone client now and altough i havent gotten any 0 fps for 1-3 seconds i have gotten 1 drop to around 15 fps lasting for around 1 second. So definitely shorter then all other drops and not as severe. But this was just once in a couple of hours so i really cant say i can conclude anything else then standalone client being more stable however not fixing the issue fully. Ill be going away on vacation but ill post an update asap. |
